Railroad Roots

Not what you think. Many of our trails have embedded tree
roots that can cause a biker to lose control momentarily or a hiker to stumble when the
shadows obscure these trail hazards. I couldn’t join the Sno-Moles at the start of their Spring
trail maintenance and clean up, so I went solo. With a borrowed pick-up truck, 4 orange
highway cones from Jaffrey DPW (thanks Tony Pilat for the idea) and some tools, I worked a 75-
yard section of the Cheshire (Jaffrey-Rindge) trail just north of County Rd Rindge. In a couple of
hours, I pulled up about a dozen roots, one big rock and left an equal number of protruding
roots for another day. Very satisfying labor and a safer trail!
