Cheshire Trail Detail Plans

Section 1

This section is restored and is approximately 5 miles in length running from Hurricane Rd in West Keene to Eastern Ave on Keene’s eastside. The trail is completely restored with benches, repair stations, and a trail surface that is mix of hard pack and pavement.

Section 2

This section is restored and starts at the Troy Depot in the center of Troy running south for 1.1 miles. The trail is completely restored with a very nice crushed stone surface.

Section 3

This is a planned section that is being funded via a TAP Grant with construction start in 2020.

This section of trail starts at Hurricane Rd in West Keene and runs north for ~2.7 miles ending at the Keene/Surry townline. The plan is to restore the surface from Hurricane Rd to the Ammi Brown Trail. Also restore the Ammi Brown Trail which runs from the Cheshire Trail to Summit Ridge Rd.  The section of the Cheshire Trail from the Ammi Brown Trail north to the Keene/Surry townline is in very good shape requiring little restoration work.

Section 4

This is a planned section.  An RTP application is being submitted to fund the project. If accepted construction will start in 2021.

This section of trail starts at Old Turnpike Rd just south of Cross Rd where a recently constructed parking lot and trail head will be found. From this point the trail runs north west past Sip Pond for 2.5 miles.

Section 5

This is a planned section that is being funded via a TAP Grant with construction start in 2025.

This section of trail starts at Joslin Station Rd just south of Swanzey Factory Rd in north east Swanzey.  The trail runs south paralleling Rt12 ending at Webb Depot Rd in Marlborough. This section of  trail is 4.2 miles in length.

Section 6

This section is called the Transportation Heritage Trail Project and is in the early planning stages. Preliminary plans have construction start in 2027.

This project is divided into two phases.

Phase 1, although the section of trail is short, only 0.8 miles, it is complex. This phase of the project opens up the current trail bed from Eastern Ave to Rt101 (yellow indicator on the map). It also puts a bridge over Rt101 (Prowess Bridge) and upgrades the Stone Arch Bridge to today’s pedestrian safety standards.

Phase 2 of the project completes the trail from the southern end of the Stone Arch Bridge, adding a bridge over Swanzey Factory Rd, and complete a few hundred yards of trail south to Joslin Station Rd.

Sections 7,8,9

Sections 7, 8, and 9 have no plans.

Section 7 starts at Webb Depot Rd in Marlborough and goes into Troy ending at the Troy Depot for a total length of 3.9 miles.

Section 8 starts 1.1 miles south of the Troy Depot running south to Templeton Turnpike in Fitzwilliam where it meets the west end of the section 4 project. This section of trail is 6.8 miles in length.

Section 9 starts at the Surry/Keene townline and runs north to NH side of the Connecticut River across from Bellows Falls, VT. This section of trail is 16 miles in length.
